Residents of Montgomery County, New York, formed the Female Evangelical Society of Montgomery in May 1822. The society was associated with the Goodwill Church, a Presbyterian congregation, and its first presidents included two pastors' wives: Harriet Whittlesey Condit (1794-1859), who served from 1822 to 1829, was the wife of Reverent Robert Wood (1795-1871); and Sarah M. The society was composed of the Presbyterian, Reformed Dutch, and Associate Reformed Churches. Its object was to spread the gospel among the Indians of North America, the inhabitants of Mexico and South America, and in other portions of the non-Christian world.
